Johnny Cash receives Kennedy Center Honors December 8, 1996

Johnny Cash becomes a Kennedy Center Honors recipient. The ceremony is televised and features a medley of Cash’s hits performed by Kris Kristofferson, Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, and daughter Rosanne Cash. Vice President Al Gore recommended Cash for the honor as an artist whose music examines “the entire range of existence, failure and recovery, entrapment and escape, weakness and strength, loss and redemption, life and death.”
